Honor Guard Unit
It was his idea and desire, after attending a funeral of a Security Officer at the Holocaust Museum located in Washington, DC to establish an Honor Guard at Howard University Police Department. His exact words were "we should have our own Honor Guard."
In 2009, we lost Sergeant Hammond after a long illness and his desire to form an Honor Guard was instilled in the heart of Lt. Brian K. Jones. With the approval of Chief Leroy K. James and cooperation and willingness of volunteer officers, the Honor Guard Unit was formed.
This group is comprised of 11 well trained commissioned fellow officers who serve as representatives of Howard University Department of Public Safety who perform ceremonial duties as prescribed by the Chief of Police. The Honor Guard has participated in several ceremonies including the 11th Annual HBCU-Chief's Training Conference held in Baltimore, MD.
