Protest Safety Awareness Update

Dear Howard University Community,

Like many of you, I mourn and feel an immense amount of grief about the grisly details revealed in the video of Tyre Nichols’ traffic stop and beating. While the justice system is responsible for determining guilt or innocence in the serious charges filed against the officers involved in the case, our communities have the continued burden of opposing and healing from violence in policing.

The Department of Public Safety remains in contact with local and federal authorities on the prospects of protests taking place over the coming days in response to the release of footage from the incident. Considering the possibilities of major protests in the District,  we want to remind students, faculty, and staff that your safety is our number one priority.

We encourage you to maintain awareness of your surroundings and to follow directives from city or federal safety officials should any peaceful protest become unruly. We also remind all students and employees that counseling and support resources are available through our after-hours crisis line at 202-345-6709 or through the University's insurance provider.

Your campus safety team is here to be helpful to our community. We will continue to build relationships and stand with you in the embodiment of truth and service at this difficult time.
