Crime Alert - Shooting Near (Off) Campus

After midnight on Sunday, October 1, 2023, officials from the Metropolitan Police Department and the HU Department of Public Safety (HUDPS) were canvassing the area around Banneker Park in response to shots fired in the vicinity. While the situation did not appear to pose an imminent threat to Howard University, we wanted to ensure the safety of our students and community members. 

As a precautionary measure, we strongly advised all students and members of the Howard University community to avoid the Banneker Park area until further notice. And instructed them not to attempt to approach the scene or interfere with law enforcement activities. 

 

All students, employees, and guests of the University are advised to follow guidance from public safety officers and campus security personnel and to report any suspicious activity in the area by calling 911 or HUDPS at 202-806-1100. 

 

General Safety Tips:

 

• Avoid isolated and dark areas.     
• Carry your mobile phone and keep it accessible.  
• Do not use doors marked as fire exits to prop or obstruct them for unauthorized access.     
• If you are approached, take note of the person’s appearance, clothing, and anything that will help to identify the subject.     
• Immediately report any suspicious activity or suspicious individuals to the Howard University Police Department at 202-806-1100. Program this number into your mobile phone for quick access.
