Off-Campus Shooting Update

Dear Howard University Community,

We are writing to update you on reports of an off-campus shooting this morning near the 2200 block of Georgia Ave., NW. The Metropolitan Police Department has concluded its investigation of the incident and has determined it to be an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.

MPD has not filed charges against the individual involved, and at no point was there an imminent threat to the campus in connection to this incident. The nature and location of the shooting did not fall under mandated federal Clery Act reporting guidelines or general safety protocols for a campus notice to avoid the general area of an investigation that was quickly contained and resolved by MPD.

The University prioritizes the safety and well-being of all campus community members and providing timely situational awareness in cases of potential harm to people and property. Our most recent campus safety training, conducted in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Education, outlines our campus-wide commitment to a culture of reporting and incident prevention.

We appreciate the support of our community members in their attention to this incident and remind all Bison of the following best safety practices.
